The Moscow Metro declared that it has reached the record short 80-second headway on the Circle Line (Line 5) during the tests of the train operation control system.

The result became possible after the modernization of the control system on the line, which took place in early 2023. During the tests, up to 45 trains were running on both tracks, so they arrived at the stations with a minimum headway of about 80 seconds – faster than in Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Beijing subways.

In 2022, passengers of the Moscow Metro and the Moscow Central Circle (MCC) made about 32 million rides using the biometric payment service.

In addition, more than 220 thousand new users registered in the Face Pay system last year. The service is used approximately 120 thousand times every day.

This month, the Moscow Metro began to connect 330 more turnstiles to the system. Apart from the metro and the MCC, Moscow plans to launch biometrics on the surface and river transport, Aeroexpress trains (airport rail link service) and the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD). Moreover, Moscow plans to link social transport cards to biometrics, including those for students.

The Moscow Metro purchased over 4 thousand modern cars since 2010 – 300 more to come in 2023

The Moscow Metro plans to receive around 300 new Moskva-2020 cars in 2023. The vehicles will be mainly used on the Big Circle Line and Line 6 of the network. Since 2010, the Moscow Metro has purchased over 4 thousand Moskva-2020 cars.

The new supplies will improve the passenger comfort on the lines where the trains of previous generation are still operating. They will also reduce headways on the existing lines – the Circle Line (Line 5) will have additional trains after the train traffic system is renewed. Finally, new supplies will help to create new jobs in the Moscow Metro: in 2023, approximately 1900 new jobs will be created in the new depots of the new Big Circle Line.

We have purchased more than 4 thousand Russian modern cars since 2010. The large-scale renewal of the fleet has increased convenience of the Moscow Metro passengers. Next year, we plan to receive another 300 Moskva-2020 cars. With new supplies, we will be able to open new lines with the usual short headways, renew the rolling stock on lines where older trains are still operating and create new jobs in the Moscow Metro with social benefits and steady income, – said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport.

The innovative Moskva-2020 train is the most modern Moscow Metro train model. In 2021, the model won the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2021 for the best design. The international jury unanimously gave it the highest rating in the Trains and Planes category.
