Moscow's Southern River Terminal reopens after restoration

The Southern River Terminal is the second river terminal of Moscow that has been restored and opened to welcome passengers.

In 2021, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin decided to reconstruct the facility in order to return it to its original historical appearance and its main transport function, transforming it into one of the key objects of the river navigation.

During 1,5 years of reparation almost all the building of the terminal has been restored while preserving the architectural and artistic design. Today the building looks like a motor ship exactly as the architects would have conceived it. The spire, compass and five sculptures known as the symbols of Five Seas have returned to their historical place.

To design of the public areas of the Southern River Terminal Moscow chose the monumental art with characteristic features of Soviet modernism — the era when the station itself was designed. The majority of modern Russian artists performed their works especially for the Southern River Terminal. Passengers will be able to enjoy 10 unique art objects at the terminal as well as historical photos of the location.

The Southern River Terminal is not only a transport hub, but also a modern public space. The Terminal houses two cafes and the restaurant Uzhniy, terrace with sun lounges, exhibition space of the Moscow Transport Museum as well as the observation deck with views of the Moskva River and the amusement park «Dream Island».

«Today Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin opened the renovated Southern River Terminal. The terminal has started receiving passengers again after more than 20 years.

From the Southern River Station Muscovites can go on cruise trips to the prominent cities of Russia like Nizhny Novgorod, Cheboksary, Kazan, Ufa and others. As for the facilities of the Terminal, it is equipped with cafes, an exhibition space of the Moscow Transport Museum as well as the observation deck with views of the Moskva River and the amusement park «Dream Island».

During the season, we are expecting up to 300 thousand visitors to visit this touristic destination,» — noted Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport.
